Questions to Ask about Radiation Therapy

How many treatments will I have?
How effective is the radiation at killing the cancer? Are there any other effective treatments?
What are the benefits and risks of treatment?
What kind of side effects will I have? How about long-term effects?
If I don’t agree to proceed with treatment, will the cancer spread?
If I have radiation, can the cancer come back?
Are there other treatments that can help, and which ones would I need?
Are there other treatment options?
Can I participate in a clinical trial? Are there any for my type of cancer?
Will radiation affect my ability to have children?
Will I still be able to drive, and can I drive myself to and from the treatment facility?
Do I need to take special precautions or follow a special diet during or after my treatment?
Can I still smoke?
Is it safe to consume alcohol?
Is it safe to take vitamins or other nutritional supplements during my treatment?
Will I be able to continue my normal activities? Work? Sexual activity? Exercise?
If not, how long should I wait to resume regular activities?
How often do I need to return for check-ups?
If I have side effects after my treatment, who can I call?
